I’m just going to need a minute before we start. Last night’s Smackdown episode saw not just a tear in AJ Styles’ ring gear. Not just a tear in Rusev’s trousers after doing squats. Last night also saw the tear in Rhyno and Heath Slater’s relationship.
Following their tag team title loss to The Wyatt Family at Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls, and their rematch at Smackdown Live, Beauty and the Man Beast broke up in one of the least wrestling ways imaginable on Talking Smack. There was no sudden chair shot, no unveiling of a priest as Eric Bischoff. It was just two bros breaking up by talking.
As The Wrestling Observer and PWInsider reported yesterday, AJ Styles picked up “a minor ankle injury” in his No Scrubs main event against Dean Ambrose – which is thought to be from the champion’s incredible 450 splash to the outside. He was kept off WWE’s live event on Monday as a “precautionary measure”, but it seems the injury is a bit more serious than originally thought.
The Rear That Rips His Gear turned up on Smackdown Live wearing one of those Stormtrooper walking boots and revealed he wasn’t medically cleared to compete against James Ellsworth. This led to Ellsworth brilliantly accusing AJ of “ducking” his championship challenge.
Wrestling News World are reporting that Styles and Ambrose were banged up after their TLC match, but both appeared fine backstage. AJ received heavy praise for his work in the match, but was ribbed considerably for the unfortunate tear in his tights.
The site are also reporting that there is concern backstage over who to program against The Miz now his Intercontinental Title feud with Dolph Ziggler is over. When I first read that I thought, ‘Smackdown’s got loads of top mid-carders who could work with The Miz’…but then I went through the roster. Bray Wyatt and Randy Orton are tag team champions, John Cena is out shooting American Grit until at least late December. The Undertaker still hasn’t collected any soles nor dug any holes. It shows that even with all the stars called up and brought back for the brand split, there is still an issue with roster depth in WWE.
Apparently one idea was to make The Miz’s next feud against Dean Ambrose. The Lunatic Fringe is reportedly only scheduled for a “one and done” match with Ellsworth to get his revenge, and after Ambrose’s interactions with Miz on Smackdown Live, this could be the direction they’re heading. The main concern backstage, though, is whether Dean going from the WWE Championship picture to the Intercontinental belt will hurt his star value in the eyes of the fans.
At least he’s getting featured, though. Poor Naomi can’t even get on a Total Divas promotional post.
The official WWE Universe Twitter account posted a congratulatory picture for Total Divas being nominated for a Women’s Image Network Best Reality Series award. The image contains zero current cast member Naomi, but does have Alicia Fox, who hasn’t been a regular for a few seasons.
Naomi noticed, tweeting: Where’s my pic tho
And replying to a fan asking why she was left off: The hell if I know but I’m about over all the bs im giving my all n have since day 1
What did you think of Smackdown Live last night? Tell me that Rhyno and Slater’s break-up was rawer than anything on Monday Nights.
