Dax Shepard and Michael Peña play Jon and Ponch, two Los Angeles motorcycle cops in over their heads, in the first trailer for CHIPS; the two actors appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! dressed as their characters to premiere the footage. The upcoming comedy is based on the 1977-1983 TV show CHiPs, which, unlike the movie, leaned toward the dramatic side during its six seasons on the air. See the trailer here…
The film seems to be similar in tone to other TV drama to comedy film adaptations, including Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s 21 Jump Street and Seth Gordon’s Baywatch. The change in genre certainly made the former a success and, although the latter won’t be hitting theaters until May, it should be able to do similar business. CHIPS doesn’t have the star power of either of those two films or the name recognition of the original series on which it’s based, but as a raunchy, adult-friendly film, it may very well prove to be a hit for Warner Bros. Pictures.
Also, be sure to check out the film’s official poster, which was revealed yesterday, here.
Jon Baker (Shepard) and Frank “Ponch” Poncherello (Peña) have just joined the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Los Angeles but for very different reasons. Baker is a beaten up pro motorbiker trying to put his life and marriage back together. Poncherello is a cocky undercover Federal agent investigating a multi-million dollar heist that may be an inside job—inside the CHP.
The inexperienced rookie and hardened pro are teamed together, but clash more than click, so kickstarting a partnership is easier said than done. But with Baker’s bike skills combined with Ponch’s street savvy it might just work…if they don’t drive each other crazy along the way.
CHIPS is set for release on March 24th and sees Shepard writing and directing as well as starring in the cast alongside Peña, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jessica McNamee, Ryan Hansen, Justin Chatwin, Adam Brody, Rosa Salazar, Vida Guerra, Maya Rudolph and Kristen Bell.
