It’s hard to complain about WWE’s evil plans of world domination when they put on events like the UK Championship tournament over the weekend. A perfectly fine Night 1 was followed up by an absolutely cracking Night 2, with my current WWE match of the year in the final between Tyler Bate and Pete Dunne.
The real incredible thing is that Tyler Bate, the first ever United Kingdom Champion, is only 19. Michael Cole and Nigel McGuiness should’ve pointed that out more.
Both finalists were really over by the end of the night, with the excellent UK crowd cheering the face and booing the heel – quite the novelty on a WWE show these days. I’m just hoping Vince McMahon doesn’t hear Tyler’s name, and then give him a Master Bate character on the main roster. The gimmick is, he beats guys off…his championship title.
NXT daddy Triple H gave his final word, though, to the guy who Bate beat:
“But before I go… @PeteDunneYxB …wow. #WWEUKCT”
He also teased an appearance for tonight’s Raw, tweeting an image of him boarding a plane with:
“…but for now. Blackpool to London back to the USA for #Raw. #NoRestForTheWicked”
Seth Rollins, it’s kind of hard to get on board with your intense hatred of Triple H and not being able to confront him face-to-face when the guy publicly broadcasts his whereabouts on Twitter. Crossfit Jesus tweeted in response:
Their feud’s build has been so slow, The Undertaker just passed it on his entrance to the ring.
Triple H seems more preoccupied with New Japan Pro Wrestling Kenny Omega, who he told ESPN:
“As far as Kenny Omega goes, I’m just interested in talent, period… To me, anytime anybody questions me on a talent — Am I interested in them? — the fact that you’re questioning me on them means that person is probably pretty talented, so, yes, I’m interested.”
Quick, someone ask him if he’s interested in Kurt Angle or CM Punk!
Omega is currently negotiating a new deal with New Japan, and Dave Meltzer is reporting one of the main sticking points is that the promotion hasn’t assured Kenny he’ll be in 2017’s title picture. There’s no way he’ll debut for WWE in the Royal Rumble match because his current New Japan contract expires two days after the event, but it’s still hard to figure out what is a storyline work here, and what might be true.
But who needs Omega when Big Red Everything Erick Rowan might be returning to Smackdown soon.
He underwent surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in October last year, and now he’s posted an eerie video on his YouTube channel, just weeks before the Royal Rumble.
In it, he’s shown going through his human hair collection, sprucing up his sheep mask, and having a romantic date with a creepily-dressed mannequin. Or, as I like to call it, Thursday nights.
The cutaways of women from the 50s, and the female mannequin opposite him has led some to speculate Rowan could be returning with the long-teased Sister Abigail.
And despite no longer being on WWE’s pre-shows, Jerry Lawler is being brought back for a talk show segment on this week’s Smackdown:
“I’m excited about the return of the King’s Court to #SmackDownLive this Tuesday night from my hometown of Memphis, TN…Don’t miss it!!!”
