Over the past few years, the Call of Duty franchise has moved further and further away from its roots as it adopted more of a sci-fi slant, culminating with last year’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.
Despite being the biggest-selling game in North American in 2016, Infinite Warfare failed to reach the heights of previous instalments in the franchise, and was outsold worldwide by EA’s Battlefield 1, which featured a World War I setting.
Well, it seems that Activision is taking note, as the publisher has admitted that the space setting of Infinite Warfare “didn’t resonate” with fans, and “wasn’t the success we planned.” In response, this year’s offering from Sledgehammer Games “will take Call of Duty back to its roots [and] traditional combat will once again take center stage.”
Are you excited about a return to traditional combat for the next Call of Duty? Did you like the sci-fi approach? Or have you already moved on from the franchise? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
