All crime will once again be legal for 12 hours, as Deadline reports that a fourth installment in the Purge franchise is happening and Universal, Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes have already added it to their release schedule.
The Purge 4 (which is currently known as the untitled Next Purge Chapter) has received a fitting July 4th, 2018 release date. For Americans, they’ll be able to celebrate Independence Day by watching people murder each other onscreen in the name of freedom.
Franchise creator James DeMonaco won’t be returning to direct, but he will, in fact, be on scripting duties again; reportedly, he’ll work with producers in finding a person to helm the next chapter.
Now that a fourth entry in the Purge series is definitely on its way, like a bevy of horror franchises from Friday the 13th to Saw, there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight, which can be a good or bad thing depending on who you ask. On one hand, most would agree that the Purge movies have only gotten better, with each installment having a little bit more bite than the last one in terms of social commentary, but on the other, the series has never really been able to live up to its fullest potential. If the trend continues, however, The Purge 4 should be a fun time at the cineplex.
It makes total sense why the studios behind the series would be interested in doing another since every Purge film (The Purge, The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year), has been a massive financial success, making at least ten times its budget on every outing.
Although plot details are being kept secret, DeMonaco has said in the past that The Purge 4 would likely be a prequel that centers around how the Purge came to be.
