Netflix has tapped director Justin Lin (Star Trek Beyond) and screenwriter Mark Heyman (Black Swan) for the upcoming period drama The Stand Off, Deadline is reporting.
The film takes place in December 1969 and follows the first major operation of the newly-formed SWAT unit as they raid the los Angeles Headquarters of the Black Panther Party, and will tell the story of the resulting face off from both perspectives.
This marks another big feature film acquisition for Netflix, which this past week added the Ridley Scott / Tom Hardy project War Party, along with Orson Welles’ final film The Other Side of the Wind and the upcoming Toho-produced Godzilla anime.
Given Lin’s commitment to The Stand Off, it raises questions about whether he’ll be returning to direct the fourth instalment of Paramount’s rebooted Star Trek series, which is currently being written by Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne.
