Back in April, director Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) polled his followers on Twitter, asking if they would be interested in various “experimental short films” distributed via video game retailer Steam. These short films would be heavily monster focused, and the studio would serve as a testing ground for potential full-scale films. That experimental studio is called Oats Studios, and today Blomkamp has released a trailer entitled “Volume 1” that is packed to the brim with monsters:
So what do we see? Well, there seems to be some kind of Starship Troopers-eque footage interspersed with a sort of reptilian Rambo premise. We also see some claustrophobic footage that brings to mind (gasp!) the Alien franchise; perhaps this is the next best thing, given Blompkamp’s Alien 5 being cancelled? This is a potentially fantastic idea. This kind of business model can ensure that the movies being made are the ones that fans want to see: Take note Hollywood!
