Oli Davis rounds up the biggest professional wrestling news in his daily WrestleTalk column…
Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal bickered back and forth about who’s going to be the WWE Champ-ARGH! Is Jinder the champion already!?What year is this!?
Oh thank god, it was just a skit.
Jinder spoke about his country and respect and blah blah blah, and then out came Kevin Owens to remind them: “Nobody cares about the House of Horrors, nobody cares about India, and…” – here comes the heel – “…nobody cares about England.”
No need to get political, man.
AJ Styles, Baron Corbin and Sami Zayn then came out one after the other, and you know how these things go – they’re all going one-on-one with The Undertaker, playas!
Wait, no. I got that wrong. Six man tag.
Six man tag for the main event. Playas.
Natalya beat Becky Lynch
The Welcoming Committee picked up a win when Tamina distracted Becky Lynch on the outside in the exact same finish from Alexa Bliss and Mickie James on Raw the previous night. Natalya just pulled Becky down off the turnbuckle and got the three count. Afterwards, Becky convinced Charlotte and Naomi to bond together to face The Welcoming Committee at Backlash. Charlotte showed some brilliant heel character consistency, boasting “I’m the best at bonding!”
Erick Rowan beat Luke Harper
Erick Rowan beat Luke Harper with a cheating thumb to the eye. Because he’s the former Wyatt Family member the fans want to see pushed.
Dolph Ziggler Confronts Shinsuke Nakamura
I could tell you what happened in this week’s Dolph Ziggler confronts Shinsuke Nakamura segment, or I could just tell you to watch any of their previous in-ring clashes. Ziggler is annoyed that people like Nakamura, Nakamura does a cool entrance, the two get briefly physical. It’s getting a bit repetitive now.
I do feel sorry for Dolph, though, so I’m going to give him some WWE Universe love: your hair is honestly amazing.
Breezeango beat The Ascension
For their second Fashion Files skit, Tyler Breeze dressed as a British bobby and Fandango was Sherlock Holmes, where the two investigated spilled paint on the floor. Who’s the culprit? It it The Uggos? No, it’s The Ascension!
Breezeango quickly squashed them, but the real highlight came after the match with The Usos’ terrific ‘12 days’ promo. Passion, intensity, and – most importantly – they don’t sound anything like all the other scripted promos in WWE.
Rusev Reveals WWE Return Date
In a promo filmed on his phone, Rusev revealed he’ll be debuting on next week’s Smackdown Live to demand his Money in the Bank championship opportunity from Shane McMahon.
Jinder Mahal, Kevin Owens & Baron Corbin beat Randy Orton, AJ Styles & Sami Zayn
Sami Zayn is very good at the whole Woody Allen neurotic backstage stuff, obsessively talking strategy with Randy Orton and AJ Styles before the main event. All those tactics didn’t do him much good, though, as he was worked over by the heels for the entire first half of the match. It was AJ’s turn for the second half, where his brief clash with Owens was a tantalising tease for their Backlash encounter.
The main event broke down when Orton got the hot tag, with everyone hitting their signature moves. But it was Jinder Mahal who was left standing tall, pinning the WWE Champion relatively clean in the middle of the ring. WWE are booking Jinder very strongly heading into Backlash. Giving him a heel faction, wins over Sami Zayn and Orton in consecutive weeks, and stealing the WWE Championship. If this experiment doesn’t work, it’s on Mahal.
So that was this week’s Smackdown Live in about 4 minutes, here’s the usual ratings recap from top to bottom: SmackDamn, Smacktastic, Smack Bang In The Middle, Ellsworthy and Raw.
This is quite weird to say, but the tag team division has become the highlight of Smackdown. Breezeango’s Fashion Police skits and the excellent Usos promo were the best part of this week’s show. Everything else was just kind of there, filling time until next week’s go-home episode.
This week’s Smackdown is Ellsworthy.
