Oli Davis rounds up the biggest professional wrestling news in his daily WrestleTalk column…
The great thing about having kids is that YOU CAN FORCE YOUR PREJUDICES AND LIFELONG AGENDAS ON THEM.
So it’s no surprise Karl Anderson is indoctrinating his son early, teaching him how to perform a Swanton Bomb and a Splash on a John Cena cuddly toy:
John Cena has been the company-fronting babyface that fans have loved to hate for over a decade. In comparison, Roman Reigns is only just beginning that magical journey. The Big Dawg celebrated his 32nd birthday yesterday. Which means he has at least 18 more Wrestlemania main events in him.
If he’s really successful, he could become a part-timer, and wrestle a finally returning CM Punk at Wrestlemania 50 in 2034…no, you’re right. That most definitely isn’t happening.
Not in WWE, at least!
Last week, British promotion 5 Star Wrestling made a very public proposal: come wrestle in our 128-man tournament, CM Punk, and we’ll pay you $1 million. This is double what Punk made for his one and only fight in UFC so far, but therein lies the problem. Punk is reportedly on a multi-fight deal with the MMA promotion, so any deal would have to go through them.
5 Star owner Daniel Hinkles has spoken to the Pancakes and Powerslams Show about this dilemma:
“I’ve never seen CM Punk’s [UFC] contract…if Conor McGregor, the Lightweight Champion of UFC, can go and box Floyd Mayweather, why the [heck] can’t CM Punk come and make a million dollars wrestling?”
Hinkles stated that he would love to talk to UFC President Dana White about the offer, and that the proposal is serious, not just a publicity stunt. In fact, he’s now announced 5 Star Wrestling is willing to offer Punk even more than the initial $1 million he pitched last week – they just want to get him in the negotiation room.
It worked with another former WWE and ECW champion, at least. 5 Star have also announced Rob Van Dam will be competing in the 128 man tournament.
Punk’s name has been in the news a lot over the last seven days – first with the $1 million return offer, and then with his onscreen bust-up with Johnny Bananas on MTV. And now, in a move very uncharacteristic of WWE – because they appear to hate the guy – CM Punk has been featured on a new video on their YouTube channel.
A clip of the WWE Championship match between The Rock and CM Punk from Elimination Chamber 2013 was uploaded there yesterday. Of course, it did show Rock beating CM Punk, but that didn’t stop an excited YouTube comments section:
The speculation began hesitantly, with i iOS asking: “Wait…. A video of Punk!? Maybe CM Punk is going to return!”
To which refridgerator8 conspiracy theorised: “Because CM Punk still works for WWE!”
Whereas Francisco Mota’s takeaway was far more concrete: “cm punk return confirmed”
While The Rockstar WWE OMG speculated on when that unlikely return would be: “PUNK OMG!!!! RETURNS IN EXTREME RULES?? :0 LIKE FOR PUNK!!!! :D”
Of course, the answer is most probably that CM Punk has been in the news a lot this week, so WWE posted the video to capitalise on the extra search traffic that would generate.
