Oli Davis rounds up the biggest professional wrestling news in his daily WrestleTalk column…
Roman Reigns Summerslam Announcement
Usually Roman Reigns not appearing on an episode of Monday Night Raw would be seen as a positive for anti-Big Dawg fans. Rather forebodingly for them, however, a promo package ran in his place, advertising his Summerslam announcement for the following week’s show.
The announcement must be pretty substantial, as WWE see fit to reveal it eight weeks before Summerslam’s 20th August date, and three weeks before Raw’s next pay-per-view – which is still called Great Balls of Fire.
Roman doesn’t currently have a storyline feud coming out of Extreme Rules, and this ‘announcement’ could be to set up his next program over the coming months. Whatever the announcement is, Roman is already warning that it’s probably going to annoy us:

God dammit, he’s retiring The Undertaker again.
John Cena ‘Free Agent’ Status Explained
Another promo ran on this week’s episode of Raw hyping John Cena’s return on the 4th July – but not just to Smackdown. Cena will be coming back to WWE as a ‘free agent’, able to appear on both brands.
The latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter has shot down theories that the two promos – Roman’s big announcement and Cena’s ‘free agent’ return – are connected, reporting that’s not currently the plan backstage.
An article posted on WWE.com has attempted to explain what’s behind Cena’s sudden status change from Smackdown contracted wrestler to ‘free agent’, hinting it’s not just that Commissioner Shane McMahon is terrible at his job:
“WWE.com has learned that The Cenation Leader became a Free Agent during the Superstar Shake-up after WrestleMania, but not much else is known about what that status entails.”
I’ve actually got a few more breaking details about Cena’s WWE return in my notes…dammit, there’s a logic hole in it.
According to Sportskeeda, Cena will likely still be appearing on Smackdown, as he’s “currently pencilled in to face Jinder Mahal for the WWE championship at this year’s Summerslam.”
And they soon might have some company. This next story likely contains spoilers for next Tuesday’s episode, so proceed with caution…
Ex-TNA Stars To Smackdown
PWInsider are reporting that former Ring of Honor and TNA Impact Wrestling stars Mike Bennett and Maria Kanellis are expected to debut at WWE’s live events this weekend, and that they’ll start on Smackdown Live on the post-Money in the Bank show. There’s speculation the two could even be involved in an angle at Sunday’s pay-per-view.
Real life husband and wife act Bennet and Kanellis finished up with TNA on 1st March, as part of the mass exodus of talent from the promotion that included Drew Galloway and Matt & Jeff Hardy. The report notes they were originally meant to debut at NXT TakeOver: Orlando on Wrestlemania weekend, but because there weren’t any storyline plans in place, the idea was dropped.
Kanellis, of course, wrestled for WWE from 2004-2010.
