Liam Hoofe with his top 10 WWE Superstars of 2017 so far…
The last few years have seen a fundamental change in the look of the average WWE superstar. The company have expanded their horizons massively over the course of the last few years, reaching out to the Indies and other promotions and as a result, given us one of the most diverse and talented rosters we have ever seen.
The fact that the WWE has such an array of talent on NXT, a show which is supposed to be their development program speaks volumes about the depth of their roster at the moment. 2017 has been a great year for the company, from an in-ring standpoint at least and here are ten of the company’s best performers of the year so far…

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a massive Charlotte mark. The former Women’s Champion is easily the best all round female performer on the WWE roster right now and while she has lost some steam since her switch to SmackDown, she is still an absolute delight to watch every time she steps onto the screen.
Her ring presence is second to none and the way she carries herself down the ramp oozes confidence. Her matches in the earlier part of the year with Bayley were also awesome and her work rate on SmackDown has been solid ever since the switch.
Hopefully, the company realise what a mistake they have made by turning her face and she reverts back to the Charlotte we all know and love in the coming months.
9: The Miz
If I had to pick one superstar who has benefitted the most from the brand split, I would 100% choose The Miz. The former WWE champion has excelled since last June, having the best year of his career and earning himself massive plaudits along the way.
Since switching to Raw he has not quite been as hot as he was on SmackDown but he is still one of the most consistently entertaining characters on WWE television and his current run with the IC title will no doubt help elevate the title after months of it stagnating with Dean Ambrose.
His feud with Cena earlier in the year also provided us with some of the best segments of the year, with The Miz’s unseen Total Bellas tape being a massive highlight in the build to WrestleMania 33.
8: Bobby Roode
NXT has really begun to find itself again over the last few months and one of the biggest reasons for that is their current champion – Bobby Roode. Roode is one of the best all-around performers the WWE have at their disposal and his ability to work as a top-level heel and also tell a great story has really helped the brand out since the turn of the year.
Not only does he have the best entrance in the whole of the company, but he comes across as a sort of Ric Flair/Triple H hybrid that will excel when he is finally given the push up to the main roster. Add to that the fact that he has had some great matches with talents like Nakamura, Itami, Dilinger and Ohno and you’ve got one of the best debut years in the history of NXT.
7: Pete Dunne
Of all the UK talent that has arrived in the WWE this year, Pete Dunne is definitely the stand out performer. From his character work to his incredible matches with Tyler Bate, this guy has it all and is destined for big things in the WWE.
His bruiserweight character, distinctive look and bold mannerisms instantly set him out from the crowd and his work with authority figures like William Regal and Triple H shows that the company have big ideas for him in the future. For those of you who are interested in Dunne, you should definitely check out his work in the likes of Progress and Revolution Pro as well – awesome stuff.
6: Kevin Owens
It’s been a roller-coaster of a year for Kevin Owens in 2017 and his most active on the WWE roster yet. Starting the year off as Universal Champion and a great match at the Royal Rumble with Roman Reigns, Owens then took part in one of the finest segments in the history of Monday Night Raw – when he turned on his best friend Chris Jericho at the Festival of Friendship.
From there he went on to lose the belt to Goldberg before having back to back PPV bouts with Jericho before moving over to SmackDown. His matches with Jericho were solid enough encounters that were never going to live up to the hype created by their excellent feud but his run with the US title has helped make the title relevant again after a lacklustre second half to 2016 for the belt.
Since his move to SmackDown he has been consistently solid in the ring, and his recent match ups with AJ Styles indicate that the pair of them are likely to put on even more great bouts over the coming months.
