At the conclusion of Spider-Man: Homecoming, we saw Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark offering Tom Holland’s Peter Parker a brand new suit, the Iron Spider – and while Peter turned it down, as we now know from the Avengers: Infinity War footage, he will be donning the new costume when Earth’s Mightiest Heroes do battle against Thanos next year.
Well, thanks to Art of VFX, we’ve got a look at the new Iron Spider suit from Homecoming, as VFX supervisor Dominik Zimmerle discusses its creation for the Marvel and Sony produced reboot.
“The new Spider-Man suit was actually designed for one of the next installments of the MCU and models and textures were done by Framestore,” states Zimmerle. “We took over the asset and did the lookdev based on provided Concept Art. The Vault itself was created from scratch by us. Our Concept Art department started from the closed outside look of it to define the graphical patterns and structure. Based on that we prepared simplified geometry and approached the interior look from an animation point of view, so how well we could create some more sophisticated opening animation with the available structure. The idea was to have a clean, high tech, presentation Vault for the new suit. It should appear distinctively ‘Stark’ originated. Based on the feedback from the Studio we refined the interior structure and modeled, textured and look deved the Vault.”
What do you make of the design for the Iron Spider suit? Are you looking forward to seeing Spidey wearing it in Infinity War, or should he have stuck with his classic costume for the time being?
A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.
Spider-Man: Homecoming sees Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei reprising their roles from Captain America: Civil War as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Aunt May, alongside Marvel veterans Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Chris Evans as Captain America. New additions to the cast include Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Bokeem Woodbine, Tyne Daly, Michael Barbieri, Abraham Attah, Hannibal Buress, Kenneth Choi, Angourie Rice, Michael Chernus, Michael Mando, Logan Marshall-Green and Jennifer Connelly.
