REBEL IN THE RYE is the audacious story of JD, a young man struggling to find his way in the bustling streets of 1930’s New York City. Like so many before him he aggressively pursues independence, love, sex and the stimulating experiences of life. He dreams of making it as a short-story writer, but it is only upon meeting Whit Burnett that he finds the mentor and friend he needs to help him break through his stubbornness and wayward ego, and start rendering his energy and life stories into words on the page.
And so is born the character of Holden Caulfield, a product of JD’s own life experiences, in a short story eventually picked up by the New Yorker. Through the unforgiving and unflinching force of Whit’s support, JD takes his creation with on a journey through the battlefields of World War 2 and the heartbreak of two great love affairs. Only then can he write the novel that turned him into the voice of a generation. But fame and success create jealousy as these two old collaborators lose sight of each other. It will take courage for JD and Whit to overcome betrayal and finally find peace and forgiveness.
