The New Day Vs The Shield
The Shield’s long-awaited return to the ring at TLC was delayed last month when Roman Reigns was unfortunately taken down by an illness. Instead, we were given their return match this week on Raw, which, to me, seemed like a wasted opportunity, especially with Survivor Series and their big match against The New Day less than a week away.
Anyway, given the correct amount of time, this one could be the match-up of the night and is a match many fans never thought they would get the chance to see.
While I’m aware I’ve given the majority of tonight’s matches to the red brand, I can’t see any result on Sunday night other than The Shield picking up the win on their big return to pay-per-view. Mark this one down this as another W in Monday Night’s column, and a potential match of the year candidate.
Predicted Winner: The Shield
Team Raw Womens (Alicia Fox, Sasha Banks, Asuka, Nia Jax and Bayley) Vs Team Smackdown (Becky Lynch, Carmella, Naomi, Tamina Snuka and TBA)
This match should be a great showcase for women’s wrestling and is hopefully given the time it deserves on the night. Raw should walk away victorious from this match for a number of reasons, the most obvious of which being that Asuka is involved. The Empress of Tomorrow has never been pinned during her time in the WWE and NXT, and having her lose on Sunday would be a terrible decision. Though, the same thing did happen with Nia last year, so don’t rule it out altogether. Secondly, Carmella could be set to cash in her MITB briefcase on Sunday night, and if this is the case, then she is definitely eating a pinfall, just take a look back at every MITB winner before their cash in to see how the night is going for her.
One idea I quite like, is Asuka being the sole survivor of Team Raw and having to defeat perhaps three members of Team SmackDown to win it for her team. It would help get over instantly, and would also put every woman on the Raw roster on the look-out. Though, it is also interesting to note that the WWE hasn’t confirmed that Natalya, who lost her belt on this Tuesday’s show, will be given the final spot on Team SmackDown. Survivor Series is famous for its surprises so there is every chance that Paige could make her surprise return this Sunday night.
Predicted Winners: Team Raw
Sole Survivor: Asuka
Team Raw (Kurt Angle, Braun Strowman, Finn Balor, Samoa Joe and Triple H) Vs Team Smackdown (Shane McMahon, John Cena, Shinsuke Nakamura, Randy Orton and Bobby Roode)
Considering all the talent involved in this match, this bout has all the potential to be even better than last year’s blockbuster Raw vs SmackDown match at the same event. There is some serious talent involved here, and the prospect of Finn Balor, or Samoa Joe squaring up to Shinsuke Nakamura, or John Cena is a mouth-watering one.
Looking at the card, I really think Sunday is going to be Raw’s night this year. In terms of potential big moments here – we have the aforementioned showdown between some talent who have never stepped into the ring together, Braun Strowman is likely going to go on some sort of crazy rampage again, and there is the potential for a screwy finish, one that involves Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. It is also interesting to note that Wikipedia (so make of that what you will) is listing Bray Wyatt, and not Braun Strowman as the fifth member of Team Raw, so perhaps Kane, or Team SmackDown, may take him out earlier in the night.
There are plenty of twist endings possible here. Triple H’s last-minute involvement further fuels talk of a Mania match between him and either Kurt or Shane ,and Jason Jordan’s last-minute exclusion from the match could see him potentially screw his father. I think we may even get a variety of these turns taking place – each one leading to the elimination of a big name. I’m going out with an outrageous prediction here, because, why not? Owens, Zayn and a returning Neville will screw Shane, and align themselves with Triple H, creating the WWE’s newest stable, one that is gunning for power in the WWE. It’s Survivor Series and after last year’s events, I’m not ruling anything out here.
Predicted Winners: Team Raw
Survivors: Triple H
Brock Lesnar Vs AJ Styles
Thanks to AJ Styles’ surprising victory on SmackDown Live last week, Survivor Series 2017 finally has a marquee match that helps it live up to its ‘big four’ billing. The first-time meeting between AJ Styles and Brock Lesnar is considered to be a dream match by many and here’s hoping that the company allows them the time to tear the roof down on Sunday night.
What worries me heading into this match, is that it won’t get given the time it deserves. Lesnar has not had a match go longer than ten minutes in the last 12 months, and while Styles is likely to prove a formidable opponent, it’s difficult to envisage that changing at Survivor Series.
To really get the most out of this match – the company need to sell us a narrative. AJ needs to be smarter than Brock, and slowly working him down, only for Brock to fight back and eventually pick up the win with an F5. Having Brock come out and just throw AJ around doesn’t do anybody any favours, certainly not the audience. Let’s just hope this is the match we all know AJ and Brock are capable of giving us.
Predicted Winner: Brock Lesnar
