Liam Hoofe with a round-up of the latest wrestling news…
Early Royal Rumble Odds
The Royal Rumble is one of the most exciting and unpredictable wrestling events of the year, and with the event a little over a month away, the bookies have already started taking bets on who will be heading into this year’s Wrestlemania for a title shot.
English bookmakers Paddy Power are the first UK site to release their odds, with John Cena coming in as the favourite at 9/4. Hot on Cena’s heels though is Roman Reigns and Shinsuke Nakamura at 5/2 and 9/11 respectively, with current WWE champion AJ Styles next at 5/1.
It’s worth noting that, at this stage, the bookies always tend to put one of the company’s biggest stars as their favourites, so John Cena being at number 1 makes sense. Personally, I would rule out Roman Reigns because Elimination Chamber is a Raw-exclusive PPV this year, and I don’t see the Universal title being defended inside the chamber. Shinsuke Nakamura, who has been long rumoured for a match with AJ Styles at Mania, is the logical choice at the moment. This is also just one company’s odds, and they often shift very quickly as the event gets closer – last year the bookies saw a major drop in Randy Orton’s odds in the two days leading up to the event, so they are worth keeping an eye on as an indication of the way things are going to go- whoever is favourite on the day has won for the last three years running.
Dolph Ziggler Update
On this week’s Smackdown, Dolph Ziggler cut a strange promo before dropping the US title belt in the middle of the ring and walking away. While yesterday I predicted that this was just a way to introduce the new US title belt, PWInsider reported that the angle is being done to keep Ziggler off TV and that he is not being advertised for any upcoming shows. There is a chance that this could be a swerve, of course, but recent rumours about Ziggler’s time in the WWE coming to an end may back it up.
Rolling Stone Name Their Wrestler of the Year
In a rather surprising move, Rolling Stone magazine has named The Miz as their wrestler of the year. While there are some fans who have supported their ranking, there are many who have found it as a rather shocking choice. The publication is one of the few mainstream publications to do a yearly round-up article for the WWE and while many fans don’t see them as a traditional outlet for wrestling news, mainstream coverage is never a bad thing for the WWE. The Miz himself reacted to the news via Twitter, asking if he could be placed on the cover of their next magazine.
