Liam Hoofe predicts this Sunday’s WWE Backlash…
Backlash has always been, traditionally, the PPV that takes place after WrestleMania. This year, however, things were a little different, as the WWE had the small matter of The Greatest Royal Rumble event in Saudi Arabia to take care off.
As a result, the WWE will be presenting us with their second major show in just 10 days this weekend as normal service resumes following the typically chaotic post Mania fall-out.
The card, which in fairness, looks solid, is set to see five of the company’s belts defended and while some of the outcomes are fairly predictable because of the Shake-Up, there is plenty to get excited about this Sunday.
Let’s break down this weekend’s Backlash card, match by match, and predict the winners of each of the eight matches.
Jeff Hardy Vs Randy Orton
This feud has not really managed to gain much momentum, largely down to the fact that Jeff had to dispense of Jinder Mahal at The Greatest Royal Rumble event last week, and as a result, the company haven’t had a lot of time to build anything for this. It looks as though Orton is going to be a permanent fixture in the US division for now, and perhaps he can reinvent himself as a heel if this feud is going to continue. This belt has had three holders over the last 2 and a bit months, so it’s time for some stability. Hardy retains here.
Prediction: Jeff Hardy Retains
The Miz Vs Seth Rollins
Again, due to the Superstar Shake-Up, this match hasn’t had a ton of build, with each man kind of doing their own thing on their different brands. The Miz has taunted Rollins a little, but this one exists just so The Miz can use his rematch clause. I see The Miz feuding with Bryan in the coming months, perhaps even starting at Backlash, so I’m giving this one to Rollins.
Prediction: Seth Rollins Retains
Carmella Vs Charlotte Flair
Carmella is just getting started as women’s champ, and her recent alliance with the Iiconics is looking promising. Charlotte has just come off the back of a big victory against Asuka at WrestleMania, but it seems unlikely the company will want Carmella to lose her belt so early in her run. These two will no doubt continue feuding, and The Iiconics will probably help screw Charlotte this Sunday night.
Prediction: Carmella Retains
Nia Jax Vs Alexa Bliss
Backlash is often full of WrestleMania rematches, oddly enough, though, this is one of only two on this year’s card.Nia and Alexa’s feud has been solid, if not spectacular, and Alexa’s recent promos have been wonderfully nasty. Nia needs a good run with the belt though, and she makes for a much more interesting champion than Alexa at this stage, with plenty of big matches in the pipeline. Alexa can no doubt find someone to antagonise in the coming months, and the prospect of a Nia Vs Ember Moon showdown is not one to be sniffed at. Nia retaining her makes a lot of sense.
Prediction: Nia Jax Retains
Bobby Lashley and Braun Strowman Vs Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn
I love Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens, but I do wish the company would find something better for them to do than to face random face pairings on PPV. It looks as though this match is probably going to be used to set up a feud between Kami and Kurt Angle later down the line, with Braun and Lashley acting in the same role as Orton and Nakamura a few months back.
Lashley and Braun have a ton of momentum at the moment, with one of them making their grand return after Mania, and the other just winning the biggest Royal Rumble match in history. Could their pairing lead to a feud of sorts between the two? It’s certainly possible, though, with both men being faces, it is difficult to decide who should turn. Either way, the faces are winning what should be a fun encounter.
Prediction: Bobby Lashley and Braun Strowman Win
Daniel Bryan Vs Big Cass
This one is not as easy to call as I first thought. Daniel Bryan seems like the obvious choice to pick up the victory here, but it is worth remembering that the WWE has never booked Daniel Bryan to look that strong in the ring, and Vince does have a penchant for men over 7 feet tall.
If the company want to continue this feud and continue to build Cass as a threat on Smackdown, then they are likely to give him the victory here, whereas if they want to position Bryan as a challenger for the belt this summer, then they will give him the victory.Bryan is still riding a wave of feel-good momentum, but my biggest question here is, where does Cass go if he loses this one?
There is always the possibility of The Miz interfering and costing Bryan here as well.I’m genuinely torn with this one, so I’ve flipped a coin and I’m going for Daniel Bryan.
Prediction: Daniel Bryan Wins
Shinsuke Nakamura Vs AJ Styles
Again, this is another difficult match to call. Shinsuke Nakamura has been an excellent as a heel and most fans would presume that leads to him getting the victory on Sunday night. That being said, the company teased the idea of Samoa Joe Vs AJ Styles this past week, and that is a mouth-watering prospect. If Shinsuke wins on Sunday night, then a rematch has to happen again, which will mean these guys have faced each other four times, whereas an AJ victory means both men can move on to something new.
The no-DQ situation levels the playing field here slightly, what with Shinsuke’s tendency to smack AJ in the balls, and I think AJ may be ready for him this Sunday. I’m giving this one to AJ, who will move on to feud with Samoa Joe in the coming months.
Prediction: AJ Styles Retains
Roman Reigns Vs Samoa Joe
Credit where it is due, Samoa Joe has been one of the best things in the WWE post Mania, and he has single-handedly made his match with Roman Reigns this Sunday night interesting. Both men are great in the ring and there is every chance this will steal the show on Sunday. Who will the WWE give the win too though? Reigns needs some momentum back after back to back defeats against Lesnar, while Joe is trying to establish himself as a force on Smackdown.
The WWE likely won’t want Reigns to lose three big PPV matches in a row, and they will just continue with Joe as if this match didn’t happen. Joe will feud with Styles after Backlash, hopefully, but he is eating the pinfall here.
Prediction: Roman Reigns Wins
