Disney and Lucasfilm unveiled the first trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker earlier this month during Star Wars Celebration, but unlike most major blockbuster trailer releases these days, the studios remained tight-lipped when it came to touting how successful the trailer launch was in terms of viewership.
Well, as Deadline has revealed, that’s likely because the trailer racked up 111 million views in its first 24 hours online – an astronomical number at face value, but not quite so impressive when you compare it to other Disney big hitters such as Frozen 2 (116 million), Beauty and the Beast (128 million), Thor: Ragnarok (136 million), The Lion King (225 million views), Avengers: Infinity War (238 million), and Avengers: Endgame (289 million).
Sticking with the Star Wars franchise, The Rise of Skywalker teaser did manage to top Star Wars: The Last Jedi (91 million views) to set a new franchise record for teaser views, but fell short of the full trailers for The Force Awakens (112 million views) and The Last Jedi (120 million). It’s also worth pointing out though that the numbers did not include those fans who watched the trailer on the Celebration live-stream.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release on December 20th 2019 with J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Mabeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
