The Fool, Third Window Films and Rapid Eye Movies have teamed up for a live-action adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s erotic manga series Barbara, which has been directed by Tezuka’s son Macoto Tezka.
Tezuka’s Barbara is an adult-oriented fantasy which deals with deals with the erotic and bizarre experiences of a famous novelist whose life is tossed upside down by a mysterious girl. Featuring in the cast are Fumi Nikaido (Himizu), Goro Inagaki (13 Assassins), Shizuka Ishibashi (Tokyo Night Sky Is Always the Densest Shade of Blue), Kiyohiko Shibukawa (Lowlife Love) and Eri Watanabe (Shall We Dance).
Here’s the first teaser trailer…
“Barbara is the work of my father which is the closest to my personal style and taste,” said Tezka. “The reason why I followed through with this film’s production is that it was a rare chance to make a co-production with many large countries and have the film being seen by a large audience across the world. It’s very challenging to do international co-productions, though being able to work with other countries and people opens up a world of possibilities.”
Tezuka’s Barbara is currently in post-production ahead of a 2019 release.
