Going into 2020, few would have predicted that Warner Bros. and DC’s Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) would have ended the year as the highest grossing comic book movie, and even fewer would have said so one the movie finished up its box office run with an underwhelming $201.8 million worldwide.
Given the craziness of the year and the global health crisis, that’s exactly the position Birds of Prey finds itself in. However, it doesn’t seem that the title of the 2020’s biggest comic book movie is enough to convince Warner to push ahead with a sequel, as Margot Robbie has revealed to THR that there’s “nothing imminent at this state, nothing worth mentioning.”
We do know that Robbie’s Harley Quinn will make her return in 2021 as part of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, but the character’s future beyond that remains a mystery. It would be a huge surprise of course if we’ve seen the last of Harley, but as for Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya, who knows?

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a twisted tale told by Harley herself, as only Harley can tell it. When Gotham’s most nefariously narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis, and his zealous right-hand, Zsasz, put a target on a young girl named Cass, the city is turned upside down looking for her. Harley, Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya’s paths collide, and the unlikely foursome have no choice but to team up to take Roman down.
Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is directed by Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) from a script by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) and sees Margot Robbie reprising her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo) as The Huntress, Jurnee Smollett (Underground) as Black Canary, Rosie Perez (Fearless) as Renee Montoya, Ella Jay Basco (Grey’s Anatomy) as Cassandra Cain, Ewan McGregor (Christopher Robin) as Black Mask, Chris Messina (Sharp Objects) as Victor Zsasz, Ali Wong (Black Box), Robert Catrini (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back), Steven Williams (The Chi), Dana Lee (Dr. Ken), Francois Chau (The Expanse) and Matthew Willig (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs).
