Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania conquers the box office with $225 million worldwide opening

February 20, 2023 by Gary Collinson

Disney and Marvel Studios kicked off Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe this past weekend by unleashing Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, with the Paul Rudd-led threequel topping the box office both domestically and internationally on its way to a $225 million global three-day opening.

In North America, Quantumania earned $104 million across the Friday-to-Sunday period, with an estimated $118 million from the four day holiday weekend delivering the third best President’s Day weekend ever behind Black Panther ($242.2 million) and Deadpool ($152.2 million). The sequel added a further $121.3 million from international markets, including $19.2 million from China, $10.9 million from the UK, $8.7 million from Mexico and $7.2 million from South Korea.

The Ant-Man series has traditionally been smaller in scale than Marvel’s bigger IPs, both in terms of stakes and box office returns, but Marvel looked to switch things up for the third outing, with the film serving as the MCU’s introduction proper of the Multiverse Saga’s big bad, Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors). And, while the box office opening certainly isn’t anywhere near Marvel’s big Avengers-level offerings, Quantumania has comfortably surpassed its two predecessors, with 2015’s Ant-Man and 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp debuting to $114 million and $161 million worldwide respectively.

In other box office news this weekend, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water became the highest-grossing movie of all time, knocking Cameron’s own Titanic down into fourth place in the process.

In Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Super-Hero partners Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) return to continue their adventures as Ant-Man and the Wasp. Together, with Hope’s parents Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), the family finds themselves exploring the Quantum Realm, interacting with strange new creatures and embarking on an adventure that will push them beyond the limits of what they thought was possible.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania sees Peyton Reed returning to the director’s chair and stars Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Evangeline Lilly (Hope Van Dyne/The Wasp), Michael Douglas (Hank Pym), Michelle Pfeiffer (Janet Van Dyne), Corey Stoll (Darren Cross/MODOK), Kathryn Newton (Cassie Lang), Jonathan Majors (Kang the Conqueror), Bill Murray (Krylar), David Dastmalchian (Veb), Katy O’Brian (Jentorra) and William Jackson Harper (Quaz).

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is in cinemas now.
