Senior Writer Scott J. Davis chats to British actress Nita Mistry about her career, her new projects and her recent signing with Bohemia Group….
Thank you for taking the time to speak to me for Flickering Myth and congratulations on all your successes!
SJD: I understand you went to drama school at Mountview. How was that whole experience? Was it always your dream to be an actor?
NM: Yes, I did attend Mountview. I really enjoyed my training there. It’s a great school and I was fortunate enough to be one of the 30 to have been selected from the few hundred applicants. Becoming an actor has always been my dream. However, it wasn’t until I moved to London that I realized that my dream was possible.
SJD: Tell us a little about your work on British TV shows and films – how did you get involved? How has that experience prepared you for the move to the US?
NM: My very first audition was for a screen role in the US movie ‘What A Girl Wants’ staring Amanda Bynes and Colin Firth and I remember having to do a 10-minute improvisation in the audition for a role that only consisted of two lines. It really did give me an insight very early on in terms of just how much preparation would be required for future auditions. I’m pleased to say that I got the role.
Not long after this I was cast in the very first series of ‘New Tricks’ which is a BBC drama. I played the daughter of a family whose mother was injured in a fire, I would say this was one of my slightly more challenging roles earlier on in my career as I had to learn several lines speaking in Bengali which was a language I was not familiar with. I also had to learn it the night before the shoot!
Having put a lot of hard work in at the early stages, it has kept me grounded in terms of having a steady flow of work which has been great, however, I’ve been in London 10+ years now so am looking for more of a challenge and I know I will get this in the US.
SJD: You work on stage, TV and film. Do you have a particular favourite?
NM: My favourite is most definitely screen. I absolutely love theatre too though and do watch a lot of plays as it’s hard not to living in London.
SJD: What projects do you have in the pipeline for 2016?
NM: Well, I’m already on my third job and its only February so it’s been a good start to 2016. I have another short film in the pipeline as well as a feature later on in the year.
SJD: Are there any actors or directors you would love to work with in the future? Any actor you’d like to play alongside?
NM: I’d love to work with Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio. Directors, again there are so many but top of my list would be Steven Spielberg.
SJD: Do you get to go to the cinema much? Any films you have enjoyed lately?
NM: Yes, I go to the cinema most weeks. The last film I watched was ‘Spotlight’ and the one before that was ‘The Revenant’. Both where absolutely fantastic.
SJD: I understand you recently signed with Bohemia Group, a renowned international agency. What does this mean for your future endeavours?
NM: It’s certainly an exciting time and I feel privileged to have signed with Bohemia Group. Bohemia group not only have offices in Los Angeles but New York, New Orleans, Dallas, Olympia, and Auckland which means I will be represented globally so I am hoping this will open a few more doors for me and my career.
SJD: Finally, any advice you would give any actor who is trying to break into the US?
NM: Be prepared in every way possible, work hard, do your homework and have a lot of thick skin as you will get a lot ‘no’s’ but believe in yourself and doors will open for you.
