Drew Goddard reveals studio demand for a Cabin in the Woods sequel

October 1, 2015 by Tom Beasley

Writer-director Drew Goddard has revealed that he and Joss Whedon have been approached to produce a sequel to genre-bending horror The Cabin in the Woods, although there are no formal plans to go ahead with a follow-up at this time.

Speaking to Den of Geek on his promotional tour as writer of The Martian, Goddard said “the studio wants to do it” and added that “they’ve come to us”.

Released in 2012 after spending a lot of time on the shelf due to financial difficulties at MGM, The Cabin in the Woods received positive reviews, but did not seem to leave the door open for a sequel.

“The fun thing about Cabin is, the rules are pretty crazy,” said Goddard. “We get away with a lot of crazy stuff so I’m sure we could figure it out if we got inspired to. I know Joss and I both feel like we don’t want to tarnish what we did with the first one. With a sequel, we’d only do it if it made us laugh hard enough, I suppose.”

So it seems the door to the cabin has not been closed for good.
