The Leftovers star Carrie Coon joins Fargo season 3

July 13, 2016 by Justin Cook

The cast for the third season of FX’s Fargo is starting to come together, as TV Line recently revealed the news that The Leftovers actress Carrie Coon has landed the female lead role opposite The Impossible and Beauty and the Beast actor Ewan McGregor. While McGregor will portray a set of twins, Emmit and Ray Stussy, Coon’s character will be that of Gloria Burgle, “a practical woman who grabs the fire extinguisher when the bacon catches fire and everyone else panics.”

Showrunner Noah Hawley previously announced that the new season, which is the most modern yet, would take place in the year 2010; seasons 1 and 2 took place in 2006 and 1979, respectively. Setting the show during this decade sounds like it will affect how Coon’s Gloria operates, as the rest of the character description mentions that she is the “chief of police in Edna Valley and a newly divorced mother” who has a hard time understanding why people in the “new world” would rather “connect more intimately with their phones than the people directly in front of them.”

Coon’s career began in theater with her role as Honey in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, for which she received a Tony nomination. Her work on HBO’s The Leftovers has been universally praised by critics, as well as her brief but memorable turn in Gone Girl.

Ever since the series began in 2014, Fargo has managed to bring in an eclectic array of talent each season. The first season’s cast included actors ranging from Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton (Sling Blade) to Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) to Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad); the second season’s cast featured such performers as Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man), Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring 2) and Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation).

Season 3 of the Emmy-winning show is slated to premiere in 2017 and will begin filming later this year.
