Sammy Davis, Jr. biopic in development from Transformers producer

June 21, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has set up a biopic of the legendary entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. at Paramount Pictures, with the studio looking to fast track the project.

Deadline reports that the movie will take inspiration from Davis’ 1965 memoir Yes I Can: The Story of Sammy Davis, Jr. and is being produced by di Bonaventura, Mike Menchel (Only the Brave) and Lionel Richie, the latter of whom is said to have been key in securing the necessary rights.

“I cannot tell you how excited I am about the signing of the Sammy Davis Jr. project with Paramount,” said Richie as part of the official announcement. “I knew and loved Sammy dearly. He was so kind to me at the beginning of my career and gave me advice that helped me become the artist that I am today. I am so happy for his kids that we can bring his story to the screen.”

The biopic will explore Davis’ early days in vaudeville as part of the Will Mastin Trio with his father and uncle, through his time in World War II as part of the integrated Special Services Unit, his big break in the 1947 film Sweet and Low, and his chance meeting with future friend and fellow Rat Pack member Frank Sinatra.
