With Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. set to come to an end next year, ABC has announced that it is in active talks with Marvel Television to extend their relationship with a “mostly” new female-focussed superhero series.
“I have spoken to Marvel and we are in active talks about one project in particular,” ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke told Deadline, adding that it would be “something brand new, mostly” and fit in with the strategy of showcasing female heroes.
ABC had previously been developing a female-led Marvel team-up series with Wonder Woman screenwriter Allan Heinberg, but the network announced in February that it was no longer moving ahead with the project.
It had also been rumoured back in 2017 that the long-gestating John Ridley (American Crime) Marvel series was based around the character of Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel, although that was never confirmed.
Whether ABC and Marvel are looking to rework either of those projects (hence the “mostly” brand new), or are looking to play with an already established supporting character in their own series (a la Agent Carter), we shall have to wait and see.
