During DC FanDome this past August, it was announced that Warner Bros. and DC Films are working on a Static Shock movie with Reginald Hudlin (House Party) and Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther) producing, and now comes word from THR that Hudlin’s Safety screenwriter Randy McKinnon is set to write the script.
Making his first appearance in 1993’s Static #1 from Milestone Comics, Static Shock around the African-American teenager Virgil Hawkins, who becomes a superhero after gaining electromagnetic powers. The character made the jump to the small screen with the DC Animated Universe series Static Shock between 2000 and 2004 before joining the main DC comic book continuity in 2008.
Static Shock is being viewed as the launching point for a new cinematic universe centred around the black superhero characters of DC’s Milestone imprint. Back in December, WB chief Walter Hamada seemingly indicated that it would be produced as an HBO Max Original alongside DC Films’ planned Batgirl movie.
