Exclusive Interview – Composer Dominik Scherrer on scoring The Tourist

March 8, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Composer Dominik Scherrer has been creating music for film and television since the early Nineties. Best known for his work on long running series Ripper Street, he has built a body of work that sets him apart from his contemporaries. In forging creative collaborations with numerous filmmakers Dominik has elevated countless titles through his considered compositional contributions.

Nowhere has this been more self-evident than in his work with Harry and Jack Williams, who are perhaps best known for Fleabag. Beyond their involvement on that title, they also have a list of dramatic work which includes The Missing, The Widow and Baptiste, projects for which they personally requested Dominik’s involvement on a creative level.

In their latest project together, streaming now on HBO Max, this creative tag team offer up a fish out of water tale with murder mystery elements. Starring Jamie Dornan, The Tourist marks another triumph for Dominik Scherrer, as he brings an intriguing premise to life through some evocative musical contributions. In a recent Zoom chat Dominik took time out to talk to Martin Carr about his process, his passions and the part composers play in any project…

Jamie Dornan stars as a British man who finds himself in the glowing red heart of the Australian outback, being pursued by a vast tank truck trying to drive him off the road. An epic cat and mouse chase unfolds and the man later wakes in hospital, hurt, but somehow alive. Except he has no idea who he is. With merciless figures from his past pursuing him, The Man’s search for answers propels him through the vast and unforgiving outback.

Full of shocking, surprising, funny and brutal turns, THE TOURIST is set in a world populated by quirky, enigmatic characters and off-beat comedy punctuates high-stakes action. At its heart, however, is a story of self-discovery with a ticking timebomb underneath: as The Man starts to uncover the mystery of who he was, he’s also forced to ask who he is now – and fast. Will he unlock the secrets of his identify before those who are trying to kill him catch up with him?

The Tourist stars Jamie Dornan (Belfast), Danielle Macdonald (Dumplin’), Shalom Brune-Franklin (Line of Duty), Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (The Missing) and Alex Dimitriades (The Cry), and Damon Herriman (Mindhunter)
