Blumhouse’s Spawn movie gains three new writers, keeps Jamie Foxx as star

October 6, 2022 by EJ Moreno

The long-planned Spawn reboot has landed a trio of new scribes to help try and bring it to life.

In a series of tweets from Blumhouse head Jason Blum, we’ve learned that the Spawn film is bringing abroad three new writers in hopes of finally getting Todd McFarlane’s reboot off the ground. It has also been confirmed that Jamie Foxx is still set to star as the titular anti-hero.

The film is gaining a gang of new writers to help bring this to life. First, we have Joker’s Scott Silver, who is also penning the sequel to that film with Todd Phillips. Next, we have The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Malcolm Spellman. And finally, the newcomer Matt Mixon, best known for his documentary Yesterday Was Everything.

The writers will work off a draft that Spawn creator Todd McFarlane previously wrote. McFarlane was eyeing the director’s chair for the project but has since admitted his skills can be best used elsewhere.

“If we’ve got an A-list actor, A-list producers, A-list writers, then do you want to shoot for A-list directors, A-list cinematographers?” McFarlane says to The Hollywood Reporter. “The answer is, ‘Of course.’ Let’s keep the momentum going.”

The reboot isn’t just a passion project for McFarlane, as writing Malcolm Spellman tells THR that this is a meaningful film for him. “I grew up in Berkeley, which is a comic book city. Todd McFarlane’s Spawn character was always one of my favorites — a Black superhero that was no bullshit, he was cool and dealt with modern issues. Myself, Matt Mixon, and Scott Silver are pledged to honoring what Todd started and what Spawn is at its core, delivering something that’s relevant and edgy and unlike any other superhero movie out there.”

Blumhouse acquired the rights to the planned Spawn film back in 2017. Originally, McFarlane’s version of the script was for a low-budget feature, but now with Blum’s new writers and vision, the project looks set to expand.
