Michael Giacchino to make feature debut with reboot of 50s monster movie Them!

January 5, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Academy-Award winning composer Michael Giacchino is set to continue his creative evolution from the orchestral pit to the director’s chair by helming a reboot of 1954 monster-movie Them! for Warner Bros.

As per Deadline’s report, Giacchino will follow-up his impressive small-screen debut on Marvel’s Werewolf by Night with a take on the classic creature-feature Them!

According to the story Giacchino is looking for writers with the hope of getting the production up and running quite soon.

If you don’t have a Michael Giacchino playlist then you’re living life wrong, so it’s also good news that the man behind Up, The Batman, Spider-man: No Way Home, War for the Planet of the Apes, and so many more, also hopes to score Them!

A Warner Bros. property, 1954’s Them! was directed by Gordon Douglas and told the story of a nest of gigantic irradiated ants that is discovered in the New Mexico desert. The monster bugs quickly become a national threat when it is discovered that two queen ants and their consorts have escaped to establish new nests, triggering a national search that culminates in a battle in the concrete spillways and storm drain system of Los Angeles.

Giacchino told Deadline that “What I love about Them! is exactly what it’s called: Them! It’s about the other, the unknown which one refuses or can’t understand. The current version of Them! is about immigration, and to tell a story about the subject through a lens of this insane science fiction monster movie”.

Let us know whether you’d like Giacchino to take the same approach to Them! as he did with Werewolf by Night, or if you’d prefer this to be a straight up giant monster movie by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
