Phoebe Waller-Bridge to write Tomb Raider series for Amazon

January 28, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Phoebe Waller-Bridge must have really enjoyed searching for the Dial of Destiny, because she’s set to remain firmly in the world of treasure-hunting by scripting a Tomb Raider series for Amazon Prime Video.

According to The Hollywood Reporter the Fleabag actor will write a TV series based on the popular video game. It is part of the Emmy-winning star’s overall deal with the streaming giants.

Sources tell THR that Waller-Bridge does not intend to star in the series, which will be the latest attempt to establish the world of Lara Croft outside of her pixelated form following big-screen adaptations of varying quality featuring Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander.

The last of those was Roar Uthaug’s 2018 reboot, starring Alicia Vikander, which grossed $274.7 million at the worldwide box-office. MGM attempted to get sequels directed by Ben Wheatley (The Meg 2) and Misha Green (Lovecraft Country) off the ground, but they got stuck in development hell, before the rights to the property expired.

An additional report by The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the series would be part of the interconnective tissue of a new Marvel-style Tomb Raider franchise that would also incorporate a movie and further videogames.

Let us know whether you think Waller-Bridge will be a good fit for bringing Lara Croft back to life on the small screen by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
