Sarah Michelle Gellar wants more Buffy, as long as she’s not in it

January 4, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Buffy The Vampire was a defining 1990s television series and launched star Sarah Michelle Gellar into a different stratosphere.

Now, decades later, there’s always chatter about bringing back the series in the era of requels and legacy sequels. We even had rumblings that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. writer Monica Owusu-Breen was working on a new take on the series, but that was put on pause. At the center of these discussions is the inclusion or return of Sarah Michelle Gellar.

The actress recently spoke about a potential reboot, as well as if she’d return to the franchise, and her answer took a lot of people by surprise.

“I’m not,” said Gellar during an interview with SFX. “I am very proud of the show that we created, and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up. I am all for them continuing the story because there’s the story of female empowerment. I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power. But like I said, the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent.”

While Gellar is against returning as Buffy herself, there’s always room for a cameo appearance, even if she’s not playing Buffy. Think of Christina Ricci’s recent appearance on Wednesday as an example of how to honor the past while still moving the story forward.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is not desperate for work; she’ll soon star in a Teen Wolf-spin off called Wolf Pack, which is set to debut on Paramount+ very soon. She also recently appeared in Netflix’s Do Revenge alongside Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke.
