Corey Stoll praises Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon: “By far the biggest scale practical set I’ve ever been on”

February 25, 2023 by EJ Moreno

If you know Zack Snyder, the filmmaker is committed to making his films feel epic in scope and scale. His upcoming Netflix space opera will continue the trend.

We’ve learned new information about Rebel Moon, Snyder’s upcoming film for the streamer, and it comes from one of the film’s stars, Corey Stoll. In a recent interview with Variety, the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania star spoke about his time on the Marvel Studios sequel and how it compared to working on Rebel Moon.

For Stoll, it came down to how different it felt working in a primarily green scale environment for Quantumania to what he calls “the biggest scale practical set” he’s worked with before.

He tells Variety, “I had a lot of fun doing it. It was like the opposite of the way I shot M.O.D.O.K., which was totally pared down. There was no movie magic happening on set. We were just people. And then [“Rebel Moon“] was by far the biggest scale practical set I’ve ever been on. They built this entire village. I don’t even know if I’m allowed to say that. It was a really impressively sized set. Beautiful.”

When asked what it was like working with the Batman v Superman filmmaker, Stoll praised Snyder’s dedication and personal approach. “Zack was super hands-on. You got the sense that a lot of the crew had been with him for a lot of projects, and they would go to the ends of the Earth for him, says Stoll. He goes on to add, “He asked a lot of everybody. It was a really tough shoot. But he was right there with everybody, and I think inspired people to push themselves harder. And I got to sort of go in and out and in a pretty short period.”

In another interview with Collider, he expanded his feelings on Snyder’s directing. He goes on to praise the filmmaker’s directing style even more.

He tells the outlet, “[Snyder] is there in the trenches with everybody. As soon as you walk onto his set, you get a sense that everybody, the cast and the crew, would go to the ends of the Earth for him because he’s there covered in dust, 110 degrees in the desert, working these crazy hours with a smile on his face, and so it really is a joy to see something on that scale, working on that scale, but with this sense of playfulness and enthusiasm that he has.”

Directed by Zack Snyder, Rebel Moon features an all-star cast that includes Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Anthony Hopkins, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Stuart Martin, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huisman, Alfonso Herrera, Ed Skrein, Cleopatra Coleman, Fra Fee, Rhian Rees, Jena Malone, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, Sky Yang, and Staz Nair.
Snyder has penned the script for Rebel Moon alongside longtime collaborators Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, with who he wrote Army of the Dead and 300, respectively. Synder will also produce the film with his producing partner and wife, Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller, via the trio’s The Stone Quarry production banner. Eric Newman of Grand Electric is also producing.

Rebel Moon is set for release on December 22nd, 2023.
