Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt join Ghostbusters: Afterlife Sequel

March 26, 2023 by EJ Moreno

The big stars are coming out to play as the Ghostbusters return to New York as Deadline reports that Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt are among the latest additions to the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel, which is currently in production.

Nanjiani and Oswalt will join returning actors Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, and Celeste O’Connor, as well as original Ghostbuster Ernie Hudson. Meanwhile, comedian James Acaster and Emily Alyn Lind (The Babysitter, Doctor Sleep) have also been cast in as-yet-undisclosed roles.

Afterlife screenwriter Gil Kenan will serve as the director on the sequel since Jason Reitman is stepping into just a writer-producer role alongside co-writer Kenan and Jason Blumenfeld.

Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt are great additions to this Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel, adding their star power to an already-hot IP. Nanjiani is a franchise player these days, making big moves in Disney-related projects like Marvel’s Eternals and Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi. Oswalt is a fan-favorite comedian, coming off a career-high with I Love My Dad, winner of the Grand Jury and Audience awards at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival.

Little is known about the project, which is still untitled, but Deadline notes there are plans to return to New York City and the iconic firehouse made famous in the original Ghostbusters. The outlet reports this film has been “a high priority for Sony” and looks to capitalize on the good faith the film established, which went on to make more than $200 million worldwide during the tail end of the pandemic.

The Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel is scheduled to be released by Sony Pictures Releasing on December 20th, 2023.
