The Flash director says Ezra Miller won’t be replaced if there’s a follow-up

May 31, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Through a combination of a global pandemic and problematic headline star, The Flash has taken so long to arrive on the big-screen that all possible speed-related news story puns have been exhausted, so it’s a welcome relief that we’re now only two weeks away from getting to see Andy Muschietti’s much-hyped DC hard-reset for ourselves.

One of the major questions that has hung over the release strategy had been whether or not to recast Ezra Miller, with the actor’s abuse allegations and legal issues threatening their future in the franchise. Well, Warner Bros. decided to stick when it came to their $200 million tentpole, and it seems that Miller has done such a great job as multiple Barry Allen’s that director Andy Muschietti has claimed there is nobody else who could play the role should there be a sequel.

Muschietti, along with his producing partner, Barbara Muschietti, was speaking to The Playlist for a future episode of their Discourse Podcast, when the subject of replacing Miller was raised. The IT director responded by saying “If [a sequel] happens, yes,” he continued “I don’t think there’s anyone that can play that character as well as they did. The other depictions of the character are great, but this particular vision of the character, they just excelled in doing it. And, as you said, the two Barrys – it feels like a character that was made for them.”

Barbara Muschietti added that “In principal photography, Ezra was brilliant and the most committed and the most professional [actor]. Ezra gave everything for this role – physically, creatively, emotionally. They were absolutely supreme.”

Whether Warner Bros., Miller, and the Muschietti’s continue on this timeline all depends on the reception to the film, with pre-release hype not matching up to the low-level box-office tracking being reported by the experts, and the future of DC currently being restructured by new co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?

The Flash is directed by Andy Muschietti (It) and stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash alongside Kiersey Clemons (Iris West), Ben Affleck (Batman), Michael Keaton (Batman), Sasha Calle (Supergirl), Michael Shannon (General Zod), Antje Traue (Faora-Ul), Kiersey Clemons (Iris West), Ron Livingston (Henry Allen), and Maribel Verdu (Nora Allen).

The Flash is set for release on June 16th, 2023.
