The Last of Us to run for at least two more seasons, 2025 return likely

July 18, 2023 by Ricky Church

It goes without saying HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us from Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann blew audiences away, recently earning a total of 24 Emmy Award nominations at this year’s ceremony. Not only did it prove popular among fans of the video games, but the mainstream audience also grew attached to the series and what the characters went through. They’ll all be happy to know then that the series will last for at least two more seasons according to Mazin.

The Last of Us was renewed for a second season shortly after its premiere in January and both Mazin and Druckmann spoke about how the second game, The Last of Us Part II, would span “multiple seasons” given the length of the story. In an interview with Deadline, Mazin reiterated this and said they have planned for the series to run longer than their renewed second season as well as remaining faithful to the sequel’s story while finding their own wiggle room to expand on story elements, much as they did for the first season.

“It’s going to be more than one season,” Mazin told Deadline. “There’s more story, so this show will not end with Season 2 unless people don’t watch it and we’ll get canceled. Barring that, we will be doing some things exactly the way they were in the game. We’re going to do other things that are in the game and we’re gonna do some things that are in the game but we’re gonna do them differently in our own method. No matter if you have played the game or not. You will be surprised as the season unfolds. We have some interesting twists and turns.”

Mazin also revealed he already wrote and handed in the script for the second season premiere prior to the writer’s strike, which is about to enter its third month, and that 2025 is a likely premiere window for the second season depending on when both the writer’s and now SAG-AFTRA strikes conclude and they complete writing and filming.

The Last of Us story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) as Joel and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) as Ellie alongside Gabriel Luna, Merle Dandridge, Jeffrey Pierce, Anna Torv, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, Lamar Johnson, Storm Reid, Keivonn Woodard, Graham Greene and Elaine Miles.
