André Øvredal offers update on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark sequel

August 5, 2023 by EJ Moreno

André Øvredal made many lifelong horror fans very happy with his adaptation of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Since its release, Scary Stories diehards have been waiting fir a sequel to the project, but things have been nearly silent. Now, we finally have an update from the director.

Promoting his latest horror offering, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Øvredal spoke about his beloved take on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Following its cult classic status, fans want another offer from Øvredal, and he promises it will come…once the ongoing Hollywood strikes wrap up.

“We have a story. We have a script. We’ve been working on the script as late as last year and even slightly into this year. The process obviously stopped with the strike — but it’s alive, for sure. COVID and then [The Last Voyage of the Demeter] eating up two years of my life certainly put a dent in the progress.”

This is the first confirmation of the sequel in quite some time. The last time Øvredal spoke about the project was 2020 when he noted how much he loved the new installment. At the time, he told ComingSoon that “we have a great new story and some fun, scary stories implemented in a good way. I’m very excited about the sequel.”

2020’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was well received by critics and grossed $105 million at the box office, becoming a financial success. Stars from the original outing Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza, Natalie Ganzhorn, and Dean Norris, are set to reprise their roles.

Once the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike is over, we’ll see what André Øvredal has cooked up for the Scary Stories fans. In the meantime, his Dracula film The Last Voyage of the Demeter is set to open on August 11th.
