Army of Darkness Forever to continue the original post-apocalyptic ending of Sam Raimi’s film

If you’ve ever wondered what might have been for the Evil Dead franchise had director Sam Raimi stuck with his original ending for Army of Darkness – the one where Ash slept too long and awoke in a post-apocalyptic future rather than returning to the S-Mart in present day 1993 – then you’re about to find out, as Dynamite Entertainment will explore that very question in the new comic series Army of Darkness Forever. 

As per Bleeding Cool, the new series is written by Tony Fleecs with art from Justin Greenwood, and “picks up immediately after the events of the beloved film, jumping between three fun timelines: The Techno Army of Darkness of 2093, the S-Mart aisles of 1993, and the middle ages chaos of Castle Kandar.”

“[The original ending] one of the great, all-time alternate takes. Instead of Ash ending up back in 1990s Michigan, fighting deadites at S-Mart, he wakes up 100 years after the end of the world in 2093,” states Fleecs. “I remember the first time I saw it on DVD, my mind just exploding at the possibilities. Ash vs. the post-apocalypse?! But then the theatrical ending has that iconic action scene and last line: “Hail to the King, baby.” So, you don’t want to lose that either.”

After it debuted in 1993, the classic Sam Raimi film Army of Darkness quickly became the most beloved movie of the popular Evil Dead franchise. And with the launch of their Army of Darkness comics in 2005, Dynamite set a new standard for the indefatigable Ash Williams’s adventures in any medium! Now, after nearly three decades of Ash-tastic action, Dynamite is upping the ante with the ultimate AOD comic book series: Army of Darkness… FOREVER!

Picking up immediately after the events of Army of Darkness (the Director’s Cut, natch), Ash chainsaws his way through the Techno Army of Darkness in 2093 and defends the sacred aisles of the S-Mart in 1993! (What? How!?) Meanwhile, in the distant past, his lady love Sheila fights off a rising evil at Castle Kandar!

Written and illustrated by comics heavyweights TONY FLEECS and JUSTIN GREENWOOD, Army of Darkness Forever features incredible covers by some of the medium’s greatest masters of horror, including series writer/mastermind TONY FLEECS, artist NICK DRAGOTTA (East of West), the zombie king himself, ARTHUR SUYDAM, and master painter FRANCESCO MATTINA!

Army of Darkness Forever #1 will go on sale on October 11th.
