Jamie Dornan reveals failed Man of Steel audition: “I wore my Superman pajamas”

August 19, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Many know actor Jamie Dornan for his career-making turn as Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades film franchise. But did you know he almost led another admittedly less raunchy franchise?

Back in the early 2010s, Dornan was fresh off his turns on the Disney-focused Once Upon a Time and the critically acclaimed series The Fall, and he was hoping to land a role in Zack Snyder’s new Superman film.

During an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Dornan gave the show some insight into his failed audition for Man of Steel.

The actor recalls, “The only one I auditioned for is Superman. That was way back when like when Henry Cavill got cast. That’s probably 12 years ago or something. I wore my own suit there.”

He continues, “Was that a mistake? They were Superman pajamas; they weren’t an actual suit. I remember an early audition for that. I got nowhere near putting the [real] suit on…I’ve had meetings with heads of studios that do those things and would talk about it, but I never got deep in any audition process for them.”

Dornan would later admit that this was the only superhero film he’s ever auditioned for; the bad memories still linger.

While he isn’t spending any time as Superman, you can next see Jamie Dornan in the latest Kenneth Branagh Poirot film, A Haunting in Venice, set for release in September.

A Haunting in Venice is set in eerie, post-World War II Venice on All Hallows’ Eve and is a terrifying mystery featuring the return of the celebrated sleuth, Hercule Poirot. Now retired and living in self-imposed exile in the world’s most glamorous city, Poirot reluctantly attends a séance at a decaying, haunted palazzo. When one of the guests is murdered, the detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets.

Featuring alongside Kenneth Branagh in the all-star cast of A Haunting in Venice are Kyle Allen, Camille Cottin, Jamie Dornan, Tina Fey, Jude Hill, Ali Khan, Emma Laird, Kelly Reilly, Riccardo Scamarcio, and Michelle Yeoh.

A Haunting in Venice opens exclusively in theaters on September 15th, 2023.
