The future of the Halloween franchise looks to be in television as rights deal heats up

September 29, 2023 by EJ Moreno

What would a televsion series filled with the murderous mayhem of Michael Myers feel like? That’s the question fans and studios are asking themselves right now as a new era of the Halloween franchise is upon us.

Bloody Disgusting notes in their report that Malek Akkad’s Trancas International Films currently holds the rights for a TV deal, and Miramax (co-owner of the film rights) is one of the parties bidding on the property.

Halloween films have been distributed by Dimension Films/Miramax since 1995 and would distribute the rest of the series until 2018’s Halloween. Universal took over for the most recent trilogy, ending with Halloween Ends in 2022.

Trancas has been shopping around for television rights for some time now. Of course, Miramax is interested, but A24 has entered the mix. The indie studio is mainly known for its arthouse and horror film output but is no stranger to television. They’ve been behind hit series like Euphoria and are even venturing into the slasher world with a Friday the 13th series called Crystal Lake.

Whether it’s through Miramax, A24, or another studio, the future of Halloween being on television is a strange new world for the franchise. After thirteen films, including sequels and requels, Halloween, and its lead slasher, Michael Myers would need solid reinvention.

The David Gordon Green trilogy for Blumhouse proved to be somewhat polarizing but did make do with its promise to close off the Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) era. Michael Myers could see a new form within television, returning to its babysitting roots or harkening back to the even more bizarre Halloween 3: Season of the Witch.

In the Bloody Disgusting report, is it claimed that Trancas International Films is “open to both film and television projects, and they’re currently taking offers from studios and streamers alike”, add that everything is on the table at this time.”
