David Fincher on his abandoned World War Z sequel plans, compares it to The Last of Us

October 26, 2023 by EJ Moreno

For some time, David Fincher was attached to a sequel for World War Z, the zombie actioner starring Brad Pitt.

While they never came to fruition, Fincher was asked about the project by GQ, pressing for details on what the filmmaker was cooking up in his follow-up to the Marc Forster-helmed blockbuster.

During the interview, he compares it to one of the biggest video games and the highly acclaimed mini-series in recent memory. He tells the outlet, “Well, it was a little like The Last of Us. I’m glad that we didn’t do what we were doing because The Last of Us has a lot more real estate to explore the same stuff. In our title sequence, we were going to use the little parasite… they used it in their title sequence, and in that wonderful opening with the Dick Cavett, David Frost-style talk show.”

When pressed on whether the World War Z sequel would’ve stuck to the source material more, Fincher gives a mysterious message: “No, no. But there is some talk of doing that.”

The iconic filmmaker David Fincher is promoting his upcoming Netflix movie, The Killer, starring Michael Fassbender. You can find our written review here, as well as our video review below…

After a fateful near-miss an assassin battles his employers, and himself, on an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal.

The film sees Michael Fassbender leading a cast that includes Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard, Sophie Charlotte, and Tilda Swinton.

The Killer arrives in select cinemas this October and on Netflix on November 10th.
