Agent Carter Season 2 Episode 5 Review – ‘The Atomic Job’

February 10, 2016 by Amy Richau

Amy Richau reviews the fifth episode of Agent Carter season 2…

“I need an atomic bomb.”

In Agent Carter’s fifth episode “The Atomic Job” Whitney Frost is the one desperate to get her hands on an atomic bomb, while Peggy, Sousa, and Jarvis are of course determined to stop her.

Both Frost and scientist Jason Wilkes discover in this episode that zero matter will move through glass, and in fact out of dead corpses, to reunite with the zero matter inside their own bodies. Wilkes manages to become “whole” again – as opposed to his previous ghostly figure – but that change also appears to come at quite a price.

Both Peggy and Whitney find themselves going after the same things in “The Atomic Job” and have a brief but frightening confrontation. Whitney is surrounded by everly increasing violent thugs, while Peggy convinces Sousa to add his agent-secretary Rose (Lesley Boone) and the goofy scientist Dr. Samberly (Matt Braunger) to their group of good guys. Jarvis of course rounds out Peggy’s crew. It would have been delightful to have Jarvis’ better half Ana also join in the fun, but that would have stretched the believability of an episode that was already a bit over the top in a few scenes. Never has being impaled seemed like not such a big deal as in this episode.

Rose and Dr. Samberly provided several fun comic moments in the episode as did villainous Hugh Jones (Ray Wise). When Peggy needs to go undercover as a secretary in Jones’ office, Wise does a fantastic job making Jones both creepy and somehow borderline likeable. Wise has always excelled in making bad guys charming and entertaining to watch, and he is a great addition to Agent Carter this season.

At the end of the day Whitney has not only failed to get her hands on an atomic bomb, but she has also completely freaked out her husband Cal. He waits for Whitney to fall asleep and then calls an emergency meeting of the council for some help. Peggy’s team is as strong as ever after their successful mission, but the same can’t be said for Sousa’s marriage proposal to nurse Violet. The actual proposal was silly, delightful, and ended with a ‘yes’.  But Violet soon sees the way Sousa looks at Peggy when he’s worried about her safety, and she knows there is more to their relationship than Sousa has told her.
