Having reprised his role as Borat in the Oscar-nominated comedy Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Sacha Baron Cohen could be dusting off another of his iconic outfits following the news that he’s working on a new project featuring leader of the Staines Massive, Ali G.
According to a recent episode of The Hot Mic with Jeff Sneider and John Rocha, Baron Cohen is in early development on a movie or series that would bring back Ali G.
There are no further details, because as Sneider notes, the comedian is extremely successful at keeping his projects covert. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm was already finished and screening before the wider world even knew it existed.
The character of Ali G first appeared on Channel 4’s The 11 O’Clock Show in 1998, before being given his own breakout series Da Ali G Show in the early 2000s. The popularity of that show, which saw Baron Cohen conducting interviews with unsuspecting subjects, led to big-screen movie Ali G Indahouse.
Baron Cohen has subsequently transferred other small-screen creations to the big-screen with huge critical and commercial success (Borat – $260M, Bruno – $138M), as well as forging himself a successful career as a dramatic actor, which saw him earn a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his role in The Trial of the Chicago 7.
