The High School Musical franchise is set to make its return courtesy of Disney’s upcoming streaming service, and Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the awkwardly-titled High School Musical: The Musical: The Series has now set its cast.
Joining the previously announced Joshua Bassett (Stuck in the Middle) as the male lead Ricky is Olivia Rodrigo (Bizaardvark) as Ricky’s ex-girlfriend and female lead Nina, while the cast will also include Kate Reinders (Broadway’s Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), Sofia Wylie (Andi Mack), Matt Cornett (Bella and the Bulldogs), Dara Renee (Freaky Friday), Julia Lester (Mom), Frankie Rodriguez (Modern Family), Larry Saperstein (Fan Girl), and Mark St. Cyr (Doomsday).

The series will follow the “cynical but charming” high school junior Ricky as he attempts to win back his ex Nina by auditioning for the lead role alongside her in their school’s production of High School Musical.
Production is underway now on the ten-episode series, which will feature new versions of High School Musical songs as well as original music. It is expected to premiere as a launch title on Disney+ when the streaming service gets underway later this year.
