James Cameron is worried about Avatar 2’s box office prospects

December 18, 2021 by EJ Moreno

The current state of the theatrical experience is still up in the air. While some blockbusters are finding their place with audiences (such as Spider-Man: No Way Home, which has just debuted with the second-biggest opening day ever), other films from big names have fizzled out.

One of James Cameron’s peers, Steven Spielberg, recently felt the effects of that with his blockbuster remake West Side Story flopping in its opening weekend, and with such hefty price attached to projects like Avatar 2, Cameron is feeling the heat and is openly questioning if his upcoming sequel can find massive success like the first outing.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Cameron expressed his concerns, stating that: “It sounds kind of nuts, the process. I mean, if Avatar hadn’t made so much damn money, we’d never do this – because it’s kind of crazy. The big issue is: Are we going to make any damn money? Big, expensive films have got to make a lot of money. We’re in a new world post-COVID, post-streaming. Maybe those [box office] numbers will never be seen again. Who knows? It’s all a big roll of the dice.”

Avatar 2 is roughly about a year away, and as Spider-Man: No Way Home is showing, there’s still hope for these massive blockbusters. But besides the pandemic aspect and streaming competition, could the long gap between Avatar and Avatar 2 hurt the box office potential as well? Truly, what is the general public’s interest in revisiting the world of Pandora? Only time will tell, but let us know your Avatar 2 box office predictions on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

Avatar 2 sees Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Matt Gerald, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, and Sigourney Weaver all reprising their roles from the 2009 blockbuster, while new additions to the cast include Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Filip Geljo, Jamie Flatters, Bailey Bass, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Duane Evans Jr., Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Keston John, and CJ Jones.

Avatar 2 is set for release in December 2022, followed by Avatar 3 in 2024, Avatar 4 in 2026, and Avatar 5 in 2028.
