James Gunn confirms J.J. Abrams-produced Superman movie is still happening

January 25, 2024 by EJ Moreno

DC Elseworlds will be a considerable part of the upcoming DC slate, and one of the most intriguing projects is still in development.

Back in 2021, it was reported that J.J. Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates were teaming up for a Superman project, but it’s been some time since an update. Since that original announcement, DC Studios has undergone significant changes, with James Gunn and Peter Safran settling in as co-chairs for the studio.

With the creative reboot and Gunn’s own Superman film in the works, many thought that the Abrams & Coates film was over. But Gunn confirms that there’s still room for the project, which will exist in the Elseworlds section, alongside Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II and Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux.

Taking it Threads, Gunn answered a fan question concerning the Abrams-produced Superman film and gave a simple “yes” regarding whether it’s still happening. Check out the post below…

“Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer.

Superman: Legacy is scheduled to open in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
