Joe Russo: “Supporting Avengers are going to become primary Avengers” in Phase Four of the MCU

January 14, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Despite the fact we’re still a few months away from Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems that Marvel already has its eye on the next run of movies post-Infinity War. Speaking at Wizard World New Orleans, Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo has suggested we could see some major changes with the roster of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Phase Four:

“Nothing can last forever,” states Russo (via Comic Book). “It’s cyclical. Some New Avengers in Phase Four are going to become prominent and then maybe some Avengers might not be around anymore. So, we’ll see how all this plays out but you have to treat every character with respect. I think it’s interesting that if you’ve seen four or five movies with the lead character having an arc, I want to see some story telling from some of the secondary characters. We’re focusing on that right now with Infinity War while we’re breaking into those movies, is which characters can we pull to the forefront who potentially haven’t had their own ‘A’ story arc to this point. I think you’ll see that the supporting Avengers are going to become primary Avengers.”

Given that we’ll have had (at least) 23 films by the time that Inhumans brings the curtain down on Phase Three, it is of course inevitable that Marvel will need to shift the focus of its core characters, especially as you’d have to assume several of the original Avengers will have moved on to pastures new by that point.

Which characters would you like to see featured more prominently in Phase Four of the MCU, or can you not think that far ahead yet? Let us know in the comments below…
