Comic Book Review – Judge Dredd Megazine #371

April 20, 2016 by Villordsutch

Villordsutch reviews Judge Dredd Megazine #371…

Borag Thungg! After spending a solid month in the Iso-Cubes relating to a “cream before jam” incident on a scone, unfortunately I let last month’s Megazine slip me by! Not to worry though as in this issue we have two brand new stories starting with the Judge Dredd: Dust to Dust and the return of Lawless, the continuation of quite frankly the brilliant Realm of the Damned, and bowing out the end of the excellent Judge Dredd: Dust.

Judge Dredd – Dust to Dust (Part 1)

Dredd’s dead, Judge Rico’s in the Cursed Earth looking for the “Cowboys” and Chief Judge Hershey – on the advice of Judge Beeny – is contacting Texas-City for help with a loan of Judges!? What!? What!? What!? This is Part 1 of Dust to Dust from Michael Carroll and the excellent Henry Flint and I haven’t got a clue what’s going on here!  Retreating back to the contents page it appears this story is running in line with the current 2000AD Prog.1977 and will be for the next four months! The words I used at the time can’t be repeated here but let’s just say I’m not happy about being left in the dark at the beginning of the latest Megazine.

Realm of the Damned (Part 3)

Here again Alex Worley and Pye Par are delivering something that fits amazing well within realms of 2000AD and Judge Dredd Megazine.  Beautiful macabre, the humour that courses through it is so thick and black it could be mistaken as Lyles Black Treacle.  To watch the bickering priests and evil ones fight over Van Helsing, as slowly he consecrates the church in their own lunch is quite excellent.  Then to see him embarrass their “Q” with his guerrilla weaponry was fantastic.

Lawless: Of Munce and Men (Part 1)

Dan Abnett & Phil Winslade return with Lawless and it’s a pleasing to see the outstanding work of Phil Winslade’s art within the pages of the Megazine again.  At the end of the last Lawless story [Judge Dredd Megazine #366] we witnessed Marshall Lawson wandering through the remains of a great Zhind Conflict from years past; she’s still missing and Deputy Nerys has been searching for her for six weeks.  Now the town is becoming itchy and Nerys has to start filling Lawson’s justice sized boots.  Dan Abnett is bringing Nerys out from behind the comfort blanket called “The Shadow of Marshall Lawson” and it’s going to be interesting to see this character develop.

Judge Dredd – Dust (Part 5)

Arthur Wyatt and Ben Willsher bring Dust to an aggressive close, with the backstory of our sand-devil revealed all that’s left to do is to bring him to justice and that’s exactly what the Judges do.  A rather rapid close to be honest, though an interesting set-up to a possible future incursion into Mega-City One from an unknown force.

Tale of the Month

Quite easy this month, it’s clearly Realm of the Damned.  This strip looks stunning in its appearance and the story is unfolding into something truly wonderful.  A tale of family deceit, terrifying horror and some wondrous humour.

Splundig Vur Thrigg!
