From the moment we caught a glimpse of a defaced Robin costume in the trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it was assumed by fans that Zack Snyder had chosen to incorporate elements of A Death in the Family into the backstory of Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight – namely, the death of the Boy Wonder at the hands of The Joker.
Well, speaking to IGN, Snyder has confirmed that the Clown Prince of Crime is indeed responsible for the death of Robin, while he also touched upon how the murder of his young partner has shaped the DCEU incarnation of the Batman.
“In my mind it was that Robin had died about ten years earlier during some run in with a young Joker, so there was a fun backstory to play with there,” states Snyder. “I felt that the whole idea was that there had been loss and there had been sacrifice. In a weird way he sacrificed everything to be Batman. He doesn’t really have a life outside the cave. I thought that including a dead Robin would help us understand that he’s been on quite a journey.”
