Godzilla 2 has lost director Gareth Edwards

May 13, 2016 by James Garcia

Just this week, Warner Bros. announced that Godzilla 2, the sequel to the 2014 reboot of the popular monster franchise, had been delayed nine months. Now, the reason for that delay appears to have been revealed: director Gareth Edwards has left the project.

The news comes from Deadline, who claim that Edwards’ exit was decided before the new release date was announced, and is an amicable one. Edwards reportedly wants to focus on “his own gestating projects,” which are smaller in scale than his first Godzilla and his next upcoming film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Godzilla 2 has plenty of time to find a new director, as it won’t roar into theaters until March 22, 2019.
