The Top 100 Your Sinclair ZX Spectrum Games: #82 – Hyperaction

June 7, 2016 by Villordsutch

From one strategy game to another, as we arrive at Hyperaction, No. #82 from Silversoft.  A puzzle game that upon first appearance you may despis, but after a few further rounds, this could become one of your firm favourites.

Hyperaction was created by Iain Christopher Hayward, Jay Derrett back in 1984. Initially Hyperaction seems like a basic Pengo clone of a game, which arrived back in 1982.  However it will soon become apparent that you have no chance on murdering these enemy mobs within this game and as soon as they catch sight of you in this maze they’ll home in on you.

The only powers at your disposal is the ability to block the path of the mobs so planning ahead is a key factor in Hyperaction – that and also thinking fast.  Once you’ve rapidly made your route to collect the flashing items or removed the room of a pre-determined colour etc. you need to get the ruddy heck out of the level.

Initially I didn’t like Hyperaction.  I couldn’t get to grips with it, I went in expecting Pengo, however during my nth go of Level One it suddenly dawned on me what I was supposed to be doing and I began to very much enjoy what Hyperaction had to offer.
